El hilo del indie pop/rock/folk

Me da palo abrir hilo nuevo, así que lo meto aquí y ale. Aunque es muchas más cosas que indie a pelo (post-hardcore, noise, alt).

Deep Sage, Gouge Away’s third studio album, started coming together in 2019 during sound checks and in small pockets of downtime between tours. In early 2020, they demoed with Brok Mende in an unassuming storage unit in Orlando. They pulled influence not only from the nostalgia of the bands they grew up listening to but also developed the sense of urgency, noise, and introspective lyrics they felt most represented them. Those demos helped shape the songs into the finished record that Deep Sage would become.

Then everything came to a halt in 2020 when a full year of plans were canceled in an instant. With the rug pulled out from under them, their backs against the wall, and no way to change the situation they were in, the members of Gouge Away had no choice but to go on a hiatus. They moved to different parts of the country and focused on their personal lives, accepting that those songs were never going to see the light of day.

But the songs lived as files waiting to be rediscovered and every once in a while, they’d get the urge to listen to them again. On New Year's Eve just before 2022, they decided to reconnect and finish writing the album with Portland, OR becoming their new writing location. While everyone was in town for a writing session, Militarie Gun had a show down the street at Mano Oculta and invited Gouge Away to play a couple of songs during their set as a surprise. It was the first show the band had played in three years and the live debut of “Maybe Blue”. Energized by the reaction, the band finished writing. They had an overabundance of material, slashing songs from the final tracklist left and right. They not only elaborated on the urgent and abrasive qualities they were known for but broadened their melodic traits too.

Deep Sage was recorded with Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East in March 2023 completely analog and almost entirely live. The band recorded together in a live room while Christina was in an isolation booth. Her vocals projected from a monitor so the band could hear her. The goal of recording live was to sound like five friends playing in a room together, just like where they started in Florida. Unpolished and far from being over-produced, this is what the heart of Gouge Away has always been.

Nuevo álbum de Kieran Hebden, a.k.a. Four Tet. Y el que más me ha enganchado en mucho tiempo. Incluso veo alguna reminiscencia a "Pause" y "Rounds", su época que más me gusta, sin desmerecer otros álbumes que también están fetén.



Esto sí que encaja como un guante: el nuevo disco de la vocalista y guitarrista norteamericana Hannah Frances, folk brillante ya sea en su sencillez más desarmante o con arreglos más elaborados. Una preciosidad.

No se si ponerlo por aquí o si tendrán muchos fans en el foro pero este grupo lo petaron hace unos años y son algo así como indie rock, algo de post punk revival y otro poco de garaje y con una cantante que estuvo en el candelabro en aquellas épocas en que el indie era lo más. Han vuelto después de 12 añitos los Gossip. No se si alguien los esperaba todavía. A mi siempre me tuvieron un par o tres de temas bastante golosos por disco y poco más:

Me pasaba lo mismo con esta banda, unos cuantos temas interesantes por disco y ya. Tuvieron un boom de popularidad que se disolvió rápido, la verdad. A ver qué tal lo nuevo, aunque el adelanto me ha parecido sosillo.

Nunca hice mucho caso a The Gossip, la verdad. Lo que más me llamó la atención siempre es que su batería es hermana de uno de los cantantes de The Blood Brothers. Megafan

El disco de Gauge Away, bastante guapo, menos de lo que esperaba, pero apañao.

Me ha gustado bastante el nuevo disco de Mount Kimbie. Buenas canciones y una producción, sonido y atmósfera que me ha sumergido totalmente.

A ver si gusta por aquí el nuevo de The Lemon Twigs: pop muy sesentero, algo barroco y recargado, ultra melódico y bastante edulcorado pero con gusto y elegancia. Hay Beatles, Beach Boys, Carpenters... Es uno de esos discos que no tendría por qué gustarme pero que se me ha hecho bastante agradable.

Los coreanos lo han vuelto a hacer. Otro disco inmenso.

Buen disco, sí. Quizás la producción es mejorable, pero han vuelto a sacar un disco disfrutable.

Por cierto, me ha dado por empezar a escuchar a estos tíos (los Lemon Twigs, digo) viendo que ahora están muy en alza. He empezado por el anterior, "Everything Harmony". Muy tranqui y a ratos incluso moñas, pero melodicamente muy guay. Cuando se inclinan más hacia el power pop, molan más. Intuyo que el que sacaron el año pasado va más en esa línea.

Este disco va mucho más allá del indie, pero como me da muchísima pereza abrir un hilo nuevo lo pongo aquí.

Lo que más me gusta de este álbum, es la emoción y sensibilidad que desprende por los cuatro costados, es super emotivo. Y la cantidad de detalles que tiene, y por supuesto, el cantante. La canción que cierra el disco es magia. Directo a mi top anual.

Me están molando Black Foxxes, quizá sea por la voz o qué pero me dan vibras de Radiohead
