NIN - Year Zero

Trent Reznor says HBO and BBC America are moving forward with the development of “Year Zero,” the grim sci-fi epic that Reznor has chronicled in his music as well as in a celebrated Alternate Reality Game (ARG).

“We are in pre-production with HBO and BBC America to do a miniseries,” Reznor said Monday. “It’s exciting. I probably shouldn’t say too much about it except that I understand that there’s a thousand hurdles before anything shows up in your TV listing. It’s been an interesting and very educational process and it cleared the HBO hurdle a few months ago and now we’re writing drafts back and forth. So it’s very much alive and incubating at the moment.”

Reznor is working with the team of Lawrence Bender, best known for producing Quentin Tarantino films such as “Pulp Fiction,” “Inglourious Basterds” and ”Reservoir Dogs“ as well as the documentaries “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Countdown to Zero,” and Kevin Kelly Brown, who was executive producer on “Roswell.“

“BBC America was the first to show interest and came on as the studio,” Reznor explained. “Our writer is Daniel Knauf from ‘Carnivàle’ and he’s busy with pages right now and revising the overall world Bible. It’s been an interesting collaborative effort but I’ve learned that [television development] moves at a glacial pace.”

“Year Zero” began (as so many things do in the music of Nine Inch Nails) from a place of wrenching emotion and sonic adventure. Reznor found himself increasingly outraged by the geopolitical situation during the Bush years and he wanted to express the fury in music, but he found himself bored by traditional approaches to protest music. Básicamente dice que la HBO y Reznor están trabajando en una miniserie de ciencia ficción llamada Year Zero, que continúa con el concepto del disco. Está trabajando con productores que normalmente trabajan con Tarantino, y el guionista/escritor de la serie es un tal Daniel Knauf que ha trabajado en Carnivale. Dicen que las cosas van muy lentas, y que todavía habrá que esperar bastante hasta que se pueda ver algo en televisión, que todavía están escribiendo borradores.

No me queda claro si la imagen de León representa terror, masturbación o ambas cosas. A mí avisarme cuando salga esto a ver si el colega gana un par de puntos...

Reznor, su parte de la historia, ya la puso con las letras de Year Zero (el CD), ahora me imagino que son la gente de TV los que deben desarrollar estas letras para crear la serie, en lo que Trent no tendrá ya mucho que decir, vamos, así suelen funcionar las adaptaciones.

Bueno, en el ARG se desarrollaba mucho la historia, bastante más allá de las letras, pero está claro que el Daniel Knauf va a tener que meter mucha mano para a partir de lo que contaba el disco y el ARG sacar una buena historia para la tv.

Con este ARG desarrollado junto a Reznor ganaron un huevo de premios, incluyendo los "Webby Awards" o algo así, que son como los "Oscars" de internet. Tras este ARG hicieron los de "The Dark Knight" (con la campaña electoral de Harvey Dent y mensajes del Joker, etc..) y alguno más, pero el de "YZ" está considerado el mejor y más complejo que se haya hecho nunca.

No ya, si que van de "cools" ya lo sé, si yo no sigo esa web muy a menudo, pero hay otra gente en otros foros que sí, y como yo leo a esa gente si postean una entrevista o una reseña o un artículo interesante del PF pues me lo leo y si eso lo pongo por aquí, pero no porque yo sea muy de seguir esa web, ya que la mitad de las bandas de las que hablan ni las conozco, pero si algún forero de otro sitio pone algo de PF de una banda que me interesa me lo leo, claro. Vamos, que no soy un gafapasta cool obsesionado con los de PF ni mucho menos.

Trent Reznor and HBO Developing "Year Zero" Sci-Fi Series

It has been over three years since Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor first mentioned turning his "Year Zero" album into a feature film. And now, he has revealed that HBO is moving forward a "Year Zero" TV series.

Plot (courtesy of Wikipedia): The story takes place in the United States in the year 2022, which has been termed "Year 0," by the American government, being the year that America was reborn. The US had suffered several major terrorist attacks, apparently by Islamic fundamentalists, including attacks on Los Angeles and Seattle. In response, the government granted itself emergency powers and seized absolute control on the country. The US government is now a Christian fundamentalist theocracy, maintaining control of the populace through institutions like the Bureau of Morality and the First Evangelical Church of Plano. Americans must get licenses to marry, bear children, etc. Subversive activities can result in these licenses being revoked. Dissenters regularly disappear from their homes in the night, and are detained in federal detainment centers and sanitariums, if not executed.

The government corporation Cedocore distributes the drug Parepin through the water supply, making Americans who drink the water apathetic and carefree. There are several underground rebel groups, mainly operating online, most notably Art is Resistance and Solutions Backwards Initiative. The First Evangelical Church of Plano is a fundamentalist Protestant Christian church which is favored by the neo-conservative government.

Amidst all of this are increasing sightings of what is labeled "The Presence," which manifests as a pair of massive ghostly hands and arms extending down from the sky into the ground. Despite early attributions of The Presence to drug-induced mass hysteria, it soon becomes clear that it is a physical phenomenon capable of being recorded on video and film. Theories vary on the real cause of the appearances, but the prevailing opinion appears to be that the hands represent God or some other equivalent supernatural force. On February 10th, 2022, a government official named Doug reports that sightings of the phenomenon are rapidly being reported from all over the world. The sequence ends with a broken message announcing the appearance of The Presence over the United States Capitol Building. The message cuts off suddenly, implying the end of the world.

Working to prevent this are the Solutions Backwards Initiative, which is a group of students, professors, and computer experts who devise a successful means with which to send information back through time using quantum mechanics in order to prevent the dystopian future (and eventual apocalypse) they live in from ever occurring. The websites and music of the "Year Zero" alternate reality game are implied to be part of the information packets sent back through the wormholes.
