Ihsahn: People keep asking me about my progressive rock influences, and of course I’ve heard King Crimson, Yes, Rush, and all that, but they’ve never really been huge influences on me. My way of writing music makes people think that I bring in these influences, and it’s never been my intention to be overly technical or use a lot of different measures, or push the envelope of music on a technical level. It’s more a case of me wanting to implement some sonic structures I hear in other types of music. I never listen to metal music privately, so I get these impressions from listening to jazz, orchestral, pop music, and more straightforward rock music. I’m a huge Radiohead fan, Prince as well. But when I implement other musical ideas, it’s rather a small section, like a sample from it. Not in a physical sense. Like on this album I have a lot of brass stabs, with very closed chords. That’s one of the sonic imprints that I wanted to work with on this album. All these ideas, I planned this before I actually thought of writing any music.
