I think it’s safe to say that Thrice have done it all genre wise, except maybe release a hip-hop album and lets hope they never go down that path. Major/Minor is not a step in a new direction, it’s more-so a more refined Beggars, but as you read on you’ll see it’s so much more than just a Beggars: Part II.

Major/Minor is a mixture of Vheissu’s post-hardcore and experimental rock with Beggars rawness, honesty, blues groove and more structured approach to songwriting and album flow. This album as a whole feels like a natural progression in Thrice’s sound rather than a deliberate attempt to try and release something that sounds different to the last material they put out as they’ve been indirectly known for in the past.

The album is a lot softer than Vheissu-esque material, but has similar dark atmospheric tones, the songs I guess you could say have more of a radio friendly feel to them. Major/Minor is a lot more groove oriented than it’s predecessor Beggars, the bass lines from Ed and Teppei’s eerie guitar parts give Major/Minor a modern 90′s post-hardcore feel. You can really hear the No Knife, Frodus, Deftone’s and Hot Water Music influence on this album.

The drum work on this album was so impressive that I had to devote an entire paragraph to it. Riley has really outdone himself on Major/Minor and is by far one of the most underrated drummers around today. Whether it be a basic ride cymbal and snare hit like the verse parts of Listen Through Me or the off-key drum rolls in Words In The Water he makes it work. Cataracts has some amazingly good drum work in it.

Dustin’s vocals on this album sound almost untreated and completely raw. Comparing the vocals of Dustin’s live vocals so far to the vocals on the album, they sound almost identical which in my opinion makes Major/Minor Thrice’s most honest sounding album to date.

Call It In The Air is definitely going to be a fan favourite, it has a sinister darkish feel to it that makes you want to repeat it a few times, not to mention the lyrics are pretty damn catchy too. Blinded is also going to be another favourite, it’s extremely catchy and sounds like it could actually be a follow up to Beggars track In Exile, “I swore I was one of the good ones”, Dustin croons.

Much like the overall theme of Beggars, most of the lyrics on Major/Minor are all mostly themed around society being corrupted, full of deceit, hateful to one another and other generally bleak and sad themes based on around society (except for Anthology perhaps). A few of the songs actually sound like distant relatives of The Alchemy Index, in terms of feel and especially the drumming. Listen Through Me sort of reminds me of the Water EP from The Alchemy Index.

Most of the songs are soft and rocky, there aren’t really any overly heavy songs on Major/Minor comparable to Vheissu or the Fire EP like a lot of people were hoping there would be, but who needs heavy open Drop A guitar when you’re Thrice and you can write creative guitar riffs anyways? If you want heavy drop-tuned guitar listen to some generic metalcore like Caliban instead.

Each and every song on this album has more groove than 70′s disco night at your local bar. Teppei provides perfectly crafted and complex guitar riffs that are the driving force of each and every song complimenting the mood set by Dustin Kensrue’s lyrics. There isn’t really a slow song on this album, they’re all mostly straight up post-hardcore rock.

Major/Minor although carrying on the feel and groove of their previous album Beggars is still yet another progression in Thrice’s career and might just be the album of their career (so far). With Major/Minor it’s obvious why Thrice has steadily, but surely started climbing the mantle once more. This album might just be the key to Thrice once again getting the recognition that they deserve as one of the most creative bands around today.

Eso me deja con mas ganas aún. Con Blur se nota el rollo Vheissu pero el mismo sonido de Beggars, pero eso, que a ver si caen en las redes de internet así sin querer.
