Twenty-four months after the release of their critically acclaimed third album The Octopus, Amplifier are back with a brand new album called Echo Street – their first with the new four-piece line-up – and a new working arrangement with Kscope.
The deal sees the band come full circle. Sales of independently released The Octopus left them amazed and delighted, and encouraged them to headhunt the promise of Kscope (home to Anathema, Porcupine Tree etc) to now provide the best of both worlds – artistic freedom and commercial clout to take Amplifier to a new level.
Such change is constant for Amplifier, who have always been a band that refuses to stand still. Now the band of Sel Balamir (guitars) and Matt Brobin (drums) re-emerge at the core of a very different animal – a four-piece line-up that has delivered a subtle shift in style allowing them to mix their epic space rock jams with accessible pieces boasting three-part vocal harmonies – sung by Sel, former Oceansize man Steve Durose (second guitar) and Alex "Magnum" Redhead (bass).

Sel: “I guess the people are going to be expecting something like a follow-up to The Octopus – but Echo Street isn't like that at all. It's important that people understand that not everything will be like what has gone before. I never want to repeat myself.”
Nothing in life is completely black and white but if The Octopus was black, then Echo Street is white.
“Before I sort the sheep out into the order of the most beautiful. I like to put all the white ones over here and all the black ones over there. That's a summary of my job – it's a bit like being a rock shepherd”

Tending the flock has also seen him double-up as an archaeologist – delving deep into the Amp-archives with Matt to create this new Amplifier album in a brand new way. The pair first dusted down cassette recordings of ancient jams to uncover old gems and reinvent them for the new line-up.
“This was really exciting. I've never, ever made a record where we just sat down and said we've got to write something right now! Let's just do it and see what happens... That could have been a nightmare for me. But we had a large body of tapes going back to the ’90s from which to cherry-pick ideas that could be developed.”
The results are startling. Echo Street opens with Four vast epics Matmos, The Wheel, Extra Vehicular and Where The River Goes, and then shifts into more subtle and reflective territory; the haunting Paris In The Spring and the classy, CSN-like Between Today And Yesterday, the Floydian infinity of the title track Echo Street before ending on the anthemic Mary Rose.

“I think the diversity on Echo Street is a strong feature. It's quite like the first album in that respect. All the songs on the first album sound quite different to one another... But it was a really difficulty album to sequence. There wasn't anything that was really obvious. So we decided to go with the time tested method of giving the listener a sustained boot in the face, before following up with a nice stroke on the back.”
“We had no idea what it was going to be when we started. The whole thing from starting to write it to actually having a finished master was 60 days. You need to put that in context with the fact that The Octopus took 4 years…”
“We are extraordinarily pleased with Echo Street. We didn’t think that we could better The Octopus, but I think that Echo Street has a timeless quality about it. It’s probably the Amplifier album that most people will know with time. There’s something really special about it…”

Resumiendo:

-Se han pasado a una compañía por que eran incapaces de volver a distribuir su álbum ellos solos (en casa de Matt, para ser más exactos xD), es el sitio de Porcupine tree y anathema. Parece buena elección.
-Han usado ideas de cassetes que tenían grabados en los noventa.
-Si el The octopus era negro, este es blanco. Completamente diferentes dentro de lo diferente que puede ser Amplifier. Supongo que quiere decir esto.
-Muchos juegos a tres voces.
-4 temas principales épicos, y luego 4 más reposados, Classy, CSN-like Between Today And Yesterda (que ha querido decir con esto? ) y el tema homónimo que no se como lo ha definido (the Floydian infinity of the title track Echo Street,( alguien me lo traduce?)y una última canción que es un himno.
-Un álbum muy parecido a su debut homónimo, en cuanto a variedad sobretodo.
-Lo han tenido muy muy difícil para darle un orden a las canciones, repiten que es un álbum muy variado y puede parecer inconexo si se compara con otros.
-Repite que le parece su mejor álbum, aunque no dice que hayan mejorado el The Octopus, simplemente es que no tienen nada que ver, uno se ha hecho en 60 dias y el otro en 4 años. También cree que será su álbum más recordado con el tiempo.

No sé, pero si resulta que será un disco estructuralmente fácil y accesible (como el primero), y con todas las tablas que un experimento como The Octopus les puede proporcionar...

Mira que yo no soy de preventas y estas cosas, pero...

Me gusta mi Amplifier ligeramente agitado, dos hielos y un poco de hype.


Es que saben venderse, y eso lo valoro muchísimo. Digo venderse, pero no quiero decir "comercializarse" ni "vender la burra". Saben lo que se hacen bastante.

Nope.

Pues que me expliquen qué hacen con él, porque un tema así no se compone ni siquiera cada dos años.

Ya está el preorder, ahora a esperar sentado hasta el fin de los tiempos.

Yo ya he pedido todo... vaya dos meses y pico eternos que tendremos...

Reescuchando el debut comienzo a sentir envidia hacia Puxi: en verdad es fan mojabragas del mejor grupo en activo del mundo.

Me encanta como hacen bucles de sus canciones: algo similar a lo que hace el grupo de mi hermano (Mojemismagdalenasentusangre) en su particular Vesta.

Hay mucho amor en este hilo.

Casualmente hoy lo he escuchado entero, como cada 1 de Enero, 8 años después sigo poniéndome 5 o 6 veces seguidas UFOS, mi obsesión con esta canción empieza a preocuparme. Aunque bueno, me es muy difícil escuchar el disco del tirón sin pararme a repetir un tema. El solo hecho de que digan que el Echo Street es parecido a este álbum me pone de los nervios, demasiado hype.

Hablando de Silvio, el tema. A mi me gusta, pero no me parece una genialidad. Vamos un buen tema pero con una estructura muy facilona, con poca originalidad, dentro de lo que es el grupo. Y teniendo en cuenta que esta gente tiene caras B estratosféricas pues... como que Silvio me parece algo menor. Y ojo, menor como algunas canciones del Octopus... The Wave, The Emperor, Golden Ratio, Interglacial Spell o Planet of Insects... son canciones peores o muy parejas con Silvio. Esta gente puede hacer absolutas maravillas, no les puedo adjudicar un "temazo" sino me cascan al menos sus típicos solos marcianos de guitarra o alguna de sus explosiones electricas.

De alguna manera cogen el hipnotismo y densidad de Kyuss y le meten guitarrazos populistas típicos de Audioslave. Algunos riffs son hasta muy Tool, y de nuevo saco a colación el concepto de las canciones-bucle. Es en esos riffs que parece que no arrancan, que se quedan trabados, donde surge la magia del bucle que (tú mismo) no quiere(s) acabar. Quieres que dure toda la eternidad.

Las melodías vocales son las mejores desde El Cielo de Dredg, y hasta aquí puedo leer.

En todo momento estoy hablando de su debut, que por cierto sigue sonando.

Tenía un colega que me definía muy bien como es el típico riff Amplifier. Hacía un movimiento con el cuerpo que con el teclado me es imposible describir Yo es que la verdad no se como coño parieron esa obra. Se les nota que no eran unos pubbers intentando entrar en una escena, o unos rockers intentando demostrar ser los más true, por no hablar de que tampoco les veo intentando experimentar ni sonar de manera singular. Más bien fue como una explosión de talento, se les ve que renuncian del rock más facilón, pero a la vez tienen una profunda admiración por el género que tocan. Para mí es el ejemplo perfecto de imaginación, partiendo del riff y de la estructura, de los bucles, de la batería, de la simple idea de juntar algunas notas perfectamente. Simplemente están en esa élite que mira por encima a todos aquellos que necesitan mezclar géneros o sonar marcianos para creerse que tienen imaginación.

La segunda mitad de Post acid Youth, la traca final de On/off, la voz y la batería de One Great Summer, el inicio de Airbourne o la simple y llana perfección de temas como Old Movies y UFOs....

Y es que encima... ¿a que grupo se parecen? ¿con quienes les relacionas después de este debut? ¿Cuantas maravillas como esta pueden existir? flotando entre estilos, sin concesiones, siendo solo puro rock?

Canciones sencillas que transmiten mucho, bien hechas y bien tocadas con ganas. A menudo las grandes bandas son grandes precisamente porque llegan a ese punto.
